A long road

Günter Grass & Silvia Meucci (1992)
With Günter Grass (1992)

I was born in Milan in 1963, and I was only four years old when my family moved to the near town of Tortona. So I did not came back until I signed up in the career of German in the Catholic University of Milan. I graduated in 1987, completed with a four year studies of Spanish language and literature. In so early stages of my professional career I had already the clear idea that I wanted to work as an intermediate in the publishing industry.

I started translating narrative and then drama, and teaching in the university until I was called for a translation test for the Italian publisher Feltrinelli. Fortunately, I not only passed the test, but after a personal interview I joined the company staff. This was in 1990.

I began working in the Rights Dept. but I soon moved for the Editors office, passing through the departments of Spanish narrative, classics, pocket editions and travel literature. In Feltrinelli, I not only learned a profession, but I was introduced in the publishing world, i.e. the Frankfurt Book Fair, that allowed me to shape a global conception of the books production and promotion: getting to know authors, understanding their psychology, following a book from manuscript to the printed copy.

In 1995 I moved to Madrid to start a family. For Feltrinelli I moved to Spain as scout of Spanish literature and translator, which I did till 2008. In 1997 I joined the Spanish publisher Ediciones Siruela as Editorial Director. From this position I could publish in the Spanish market, Italian classics as Calvino, Manganelli, Savinio among others, and international authors as Amos Oz, Erri de Luca, Fred Vargas, Veit Heinichen, Cees Nooteboom, Herta Müller, Ingeborg Bachmann, George Steiner, Peter Sloterdijk and Benedetta Craveri, being responsible also of essays and new collections, one of them fully dedicated to thrillers. In 2003 we, as publishers, were awarded with the National Award to the best publishing work of the Culture Ministry of Spain.

For two years I have also been teaching in the Publishing master of Santillana-Universidad de Salamanca. It was a really thrilling experience to help the attendees to find their place in the publishing world, and instill them the two ingredients needed to cook the authentic professionalism: curiosity and enthusiasm.

All these activities to distinguish me, among other fellow citizens of Madrid, so in 2005 I was priced with Italinanity award in the Culture area, given by the Com.it.es of Madrid. After that, in 2007, I obtained the knighthood of the Italian Republic, awarded with the Italian Solidarity Star for my work in the promotion of the Italian culture abroad. I reached a recognized prestige in being a bridge between two different cultures.

In 2010 my roots called me back to Milan to start a new phase of my professional life: use all the experience accumulated to discover and promote new authors in my own country: again intermediate, as always with curiosity and enthusiasm.

MEUCCIAGENCY.COM

After one year of work as free-lance for the literary agency of Milan Berla & Griffini Rights Agency, I was ready to open a small agency, ready to use my wide contact network in the industry. This has been possible thanks to the support of my IT partner, Alberto Suárez (Bilbao, 1965), Telecommunications Engineer with a Master in Business Administration and expert in web development, in charge of the administration and technological operations of the company.

Alberto Suárez, Tech. and Administration Director

Officially open from 1st of January 2012, the Silvia Meucci Literary Agency (Meucci Agency in short) has two long term objectives: to offer the Italian publishers my comprehensive contacts network in the Spanish market (and vice versa), becoming a main reference regarding the Spanish culture and its vast linguistic area.

The second objective is to discover fresh new Italian voices in order to work on their promotion both in the domestic and international markets.

How do we work

In the Meucci Agency we have a high level of confidence in the efficiency benefits that we can obtain from a appropriate use of the new technologies in our commercial operations, with special attention in enhancing what is basic in any representative work: the personal relationships.

This is why we want that our web page becomes a reference point to all our clients and authors. Each who will register will have one’s own private area to find real time updated information regarding any commercial or administrative affair, or be able to interact in a friendly and flexible manner.

Apart from these private services, our web site offers a public section where useful information can be found by professionals, authors looking for an agent, or just readers interested in any of our authors or books. Following can be found a site plan of the public web page:
